51,7 million dollars for a dream on wheels: Ferrari 250 GTO auctioned!

Imagine you just have 51,7 million dollars “about” and you decide to spend the amount on a car in an auction – and not just any car, but “that” Ferrari GTO 250 from 1962. That's exactly what happened in New York now. But hold on tight: For many experts, the price is even considered one Bargain! The 250 GTO is no ordinary athlete. With only 39 copies built, including 34 in the special “1962” version, it is something like the holy grail among collector cars. And the particular model that went under the hammer at Sotheby's is notable for its racing history and origins in Maranello something very special. The bright red speedster, which belonged to a US collector for 38 years, started at “modest" 34 million dollars.

At the end of the auction there were whopping ones 47 million on the meter – plus fees, which is the total price 51,7 million dollars drove. This means the Italian has the record for the “second highest” amountever paid for a car at auction, set. Just a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which was incredible last year 135 million euros was sold (we reported), is “far” ahead of him. But here's where it gets even more interesting: Despite the high price, the Ferrari was good below expectations of experts who at least 60 million dollars predicted. For comparison: Another example of a 250 GTO was sold in a private sale in 2018 70 million dollars traded. By the way, the 250 GTO now being auctioned has an impressive history.

The vehicle from the auction occupied that second place in a 1000 kilometer race at the Nürburgring in Germany and is considered the only copy from 1962, which was used by the Ferrari factory team. After a few races in Italy, the car found its way to the USA, where it changed hands several times before ending up in the hands of a collector from Ohio in 1985. This 250 GTO is not just a car, it is a piece of motorsport history, an investment that makes hearts beat faster and makes a clear statement in the world of collector vehicles. With the bright red, the Racing history and the exclusive Status it is a dream for every car enthusiast. Photo credit/source: RM Sotheby's
