Increase speed limit for 50 scooters to 60 km/h: Petition gives hope!

Before we turn to the current petition, let's take a look back: vehicles from the GDR like these Samson S51, S50 or the Schwalbe may already thanks to grandfathering legally 60 km/h drive. This regulation has proven its worth since reunification and could serve as a model for the planned change. So far it was away from the GDR classics only illegal possible to jet through the city on a scooter at up to 60 km/h. But that could change soon. A petition started earlier this year calls for the Increase in the maximum permissible speed for mopeds up to 50 cm³/4 KW from 45 to 60 km / h. The reasoning: The current speed limit turns scooters into rolling obstacles in city traffic, provoking dangerous situations.

Petition speed limit for 50 scooters

Since January 2023 signatures were collected for the petition. With over 52.000 signers, the goal of 50.000 signatures was easily exceeded. The next step is to submit the petition to the German Bundestag. The exact wording of the petition reads: "The German Bundestag may decide to increase the permissible maximum speed for mopeds up to 50 cm³ cubic capacity or for e-scooters up to a maximum Continuous rated power of 4 KW (6 HP)who may be used with the category AM driver's license integrated into the category B driver's license, from 45 km/h to 60 km/h to raise."

The challenge: An EU-wide regulation!

However, the biggest hurdle for the implementation of the petition is the EU. A process is currently underway to standardize the driving license guidelines in the member states. To decide on an exception to the 45 km/h speed limit for scooters only for Germany, should therefore be difficult. And a Europe-wide implementation could be associated with further hurdles. And another problem, a minimum speed of 60 km/h theoretically allows access to freeways and motor roads. That would be the same problem as in the city. One would be an obstacle. Nevertheless, it is to be hoped that the petition will find favor with politicians. We keep our fingers crossed!

That's why the GDR mopeds are so popular!

Permission for GDR mopeds like that Samson S51, S50 or the Schwalbeto drive at 60 km/h has historical reasons. When the vehicles were produced in the GDR, there were no speed limit of 45 km/h as today. After the reunification of Germany, a Stock protection introduced. This means that they can continue to drive at their original maximum speed of 60 km/h. This grandfathering was introduced in order not to disadvantage the owners of the vehicles and to preserve the cultural heritage of the GDR motorcycle industry. Since then, the regulation has proven itself and could serve as a model for adjusting the speed limit for modern 50s scooter serve.

  1. So the thing about the motorway is not true at all, since you have to be able to drive “more than 60” i.e. 61, which I don’t think is the case “up to 60”.
