"i-Kfz" soon also for companies, dealers and insurance companies!

Online vehicle registration, also known as “i-Kfz”, will be expanded from September 1, 2023 to make it easier for companies, dealers and insurance companies to access it. The approval authorities are thus taking the next step towards digitization. Since October 1st, 2019, the use of waiting tokens in the tourist offices has been history. If desired, the plaques for the license plates are delivered by post within ten days, and driving is already previously allowed, as the digital notification is valid as proof of admission. All formalities such as changes to the vehicle registration document, re-registration, transfers or decommissioning can also be carried out using the internet-based vehicle registration system online be done.

2023 "i-Kfz" approval

With the new "i-Kfz" regulation of the traffic light government, which has also received the approval of the Federal Council, the processes are to be accelerated. Legal entities, such as companies and associations, and private individuals, such as car dealerships and registration service providers, can then register vehicles directly online. The same applies to insurance companies, who are already contacted after the car purchase. Approval via the motor vehicle insurer will speed up, simplify and reduce bureaucracy when buying a car or re-registering after moving. The online approval is done via the website of the relevant authority.

However, you need the new ID card (nPA) with an activated online function (eID) or an electronic residence permit (eAT), the appropriate PIN code, a reader or smartphone with an NFC chip and the ID card app 2 (free of charge). Since 2015, the registration certificate part II (vehicle registration) has contained a security code that has to be scratched off and entered for online registration. The online registration process is very simple and involves entering the vehicle identification number (VIN), the security code, the date of the last general inspection (HU), the eVB number of the insurance company and the IBAN of the owner. The application is then completed and the fee is paid via e-payment (e.g. by credit card).

the plaques come in the mail

A clerk checks the application and the approval notice, vehicle documents and stickers are then sent by post. The whole process takes about two to three business days, which eliminates the waiting time in the office. As with conventional registration, the applicant is still responsible for purchasing the number plates. And from September 1, 2023 it will be possible to put the vehicle into operation immediately after the new digital registration, without having to wait for the vehicle documents and stickers to be sent. The notification of admission in digital form serves as proof and is valid For 10 days, in order to be able to drive directly on public roads.

And as already mentioned, it will then also be possible for legal entities to submit registration applications digitally to the registration authorities via the i-Kfz portals. Legal entities under private law (car dealerships, registration service providers, etc.) who submit many applications per year will therefore have an easier time. You will soon be able to enter the applications digitally nationwide via a uniform interface (major customer interface) at the Federal Motor Transport Authority in the i-Kfz portals. And even insurers can soon be commissioned with digital approval. You can by means Video identification process prove the identity of the holder. An electronic identity card is not required.

Is it complicated to register a car online?

Registering the vehicle online works exactly the same way. The prerequisite is that the indicator is taken away. The application is automatically checked in real time and the notification of admission can be accessed online within 30 minutes. This can be printed out and taken with you immediately to set off straight away. The registration certificate (Part I & II) and an information letter will be sent by post from the registration authority afterwards.

And deregistering the vehicle online is just as easy. After the online identity card is registered with the authority, the security code on the vehicle registration document and that on the license plate must be exposed (becomes visible when the seal is removed). After all the required data has been entered into the mask, the application is completed and the deregistration fee is paid. The vehicle is then taken out of service and the corresponding notice is sent by post.

Cost of online admission?

  • there are only uniform fees for digital admission
  • there are additional material costs for issuing and sending the documents
  • there is a time and money saving by eliminating the need to drive to the traffic office
  • Digital first registration: €27,90 (instead of €27)
  • Description: €28,20 (instead of €27)
  • De-registration of a car: €5,70 (instead of €6,90)
  • Additional costs: €10,20 for sending the registration certificate part II (registered mail or postal delivery document)
