Fake & cheeky: Brake cover from China without meaning and purpose

[Update: 06.10.2023] This post was updatedto take more recent information into account. Looking for perforated brake discs for our VW Phaeton, on one of the largest online marketplaces, we were now rather coincidentally called Brake Cover Covers (Brake Cover, brake caliper covers, brake caliper cover) proposed. In a twist, they even have that protected Owned Brembo logo and all for the price of only 69 €. A joke and as meaningless as one Disc brakes dummy. The brake covers (Brake Covers) are supposedly made of heat-resistant plastic and come in a set for the front and rear axle. The absolute highlight is the fact that these covers are simply “glued” to the brake system.

Brake cover from China

So if you ever see a Brembo brake caliper cover coming through your windshield at 200 km/h, let me tell you - Brembo has these components nothing to do. The company has never made brake covers and will probably stay that way. What good is a huge fake Brembo brake caliper if there's just a cheap brake system underneath? Other “highlights” of the covers are the included 2-component adhesive or the fact that possible “rework” before attachment cannot be ruled out.

without words

There are even videos online where you drill a hole in the brake caliper to screw the parts on!!! Without words… By the way, of course, these things have no approval whatsoever. This means that the vehicle's operating license expires as soon as this waste is installed. Apart from that, even every layman should recognize the disproportionate size of the huge covers to the sometimes tiny brake discs, which is already a source of a lot of smiles and malice at a tuning meeting.

Best of all, don't even think about it!

This is what a Brembo brake system looks like

Paint your brake system, you may miss one if you want individual stickersHowever, do not start thinking about sticking or screwing brake covers from China and endangering your health and those of others. Tip: notify vendors who sell these products and do not be afraid to give notice to Customs or Brembo. Other names are by the way Brake Cover, Brake Cover, Brake Cover, Brake Cover, Brake Caliper Cover, Brake Caliper Cover, Brake Caliper Cover, Caliper Cover, Saddle Cover, Saddle Cover.

What is a brake caliper cover?

  • Caliper cover are covers usually made of plastic or metal that are attached to the vehicle's brake calipers. Their primary function is usually optical, to improve appearance by giving the calipers a specific color or design.

Why might brake caliper covers be considered trash?

  1. Heat insulation: Brake caliper covers can affect brake heat dissipation. Brakes generate heat as they are used, which must be dissipated efficiently to avoid overheating. The covers could trap this heat, affecting the performance and life of the brakes.
  2. Unnecessary weight: Any additional weight, even minimal, can reduce the efficiency of the vehicle. High-performance vehicles aim to keep weight as low as possible, and any additional weight, even from caliper covers, is nonsense.
  3. Aesthetics vs. function: Brake caliper covers are for visual purposes only and do not offer any functional benefits.
  4. security concerns: In some cases, poorly fitted or cheap caliper covers can compromise braking performance or even pose a hazard if they come loose while driving.

Are brake caliper covers just for looks?

  • Mainly yes. While some claim that Caliper cover In most cases, the main purpose of keeping dirt or brake dust away from the brake calipers is clearly of a visual nature - to convey a sporty or modified (fake) look.

What alternatives are there to brake caliper covers?

  • If you want to improve the appearance of the calipers without using such covers, you might consider painting the calipers yourself. Specific Caliper colors are heat resistant and can give saddles a rich color without affecting their performance.
