TÜV costs 2023: This is what HU & AU currently cost in Germany!

The German TÜV, strictly speaking the main inspection, is known and feared. But its purpose is to ensure the roadworthiness of vehicles so as not to endanger occupants and other road users. Since January 1, 2023, however, the prices for TÜV inspections, like everything in this country, gone up. Motorists should therefore be prepared for the new costs. A main inspection (HU) and an emissions test (AU) must be carried out for each vehicle. Both tests can either be completed directly at the TÜV or at other test centers such as Dekra. The costs vary depending on the vehicle type and weight. As a general rule, the heavier the vehicle, the higher the MOT costs!

the TÜV costs in 2023

  • In 2023, TÜV main and AU will cost an average of between €134 and €145, according to “Wirtschaftswoche”.
  • Motorcycles cost between 67 and 84 € for both examinations together.
  • However, the prices vary depending on the vehicle type, weight and test center.

The exact costs for HU and AU differ in the individual federal states, with regional price differences among providers being more important than country-specific differences. In 2023, the average costs for a HU including AU for cars in Germany will be between €134 and €145, provided the vehicle weighs no more than 3,5 tons. If you only want to have an HU carried out, you pay an average of between €57 and €95. For motorcycles up to 3,5 tons, the costs for the HU with AU in 2023 are between €67 and €84. Anyone who only wants to have their motorcycle overhauled must expect costs of between €42 and €60 on average.

What to look out for when driving to the HU by car?

  • Have all papers ready: Vehicle registration document (registration certificate part I) and, if applicable, test report from the last general inspection
  • Check lighting: Headlights, turn signals, brake lights, taillights, fog lights and tail lights
  • Check tires: Tread depth, condition, air pressure, spare wheel
  • Check windshield wipers and washer system: Function, wiper blades, sufficient windscreen washer fluid
  • Check engine compartment: Oil level, coolant, V-belt, any leaks
  • Inspect exhaust system: Corrosion, fastening, tightness
  • Check brakes: Brake fluid level, brake pads, brake discs
  • Test seat belts: Function, wear, winding mechanism
  • Have a warning triangle, first aid kit and safety vest in the vehicle
  • Clean vehicle inside and outside: ensure good visibility of license plates, headlights and taillights
  • Do not ignore obvious flaws: repairs, in have the HU carried out in order to avoid re-inspections

What else needs to be considered with the motorcycle?

  • Chain or cardan drive: Tension, lubrication, wear
  • Kickstand and footpegs: Check safe stand and function
  • Steering and suspension: Play in the steering head bearing, fork tightness, suspension strut
  • Frame, paneling and attachments: Inspect for damage or cracks

What else needs to be taken into account with the mobile home/camper?

  • The inspection intervals depend on the permissible total weight and the age of the mobile home.
  • Motorhomes over 7,5 tons have to go to the HU and AU once a year, mobile homes between 3,5 and 7,5 tons have to go to the "TÜV" annually if they are older than six years, younger vehicles every two years.
  • The TÜV costs in 2023 are higher than for a car, between €120 and €180 depending on the weight class.
  • In addition to the technical aspects, the test also includes the safety of the structures and equipment of the mobile home.

DOf course that wasn't the end of it.
