Mobile home check before the start of the season

mobile homes, so-called Camper, remain popular even after the Corona years: According to a publication by the CIVD industry association, over 66.500 of these vehicles were newly registered last year alone (civd.de, 16.01.23/XNUMX/XNUMX). Before the first ride, their owners should now check their tires and load to ensure a safe start to the new season. For most RV owners, the season starts in April. Then the first higher temperatures lure at least to weekend tours. But after the long winter break, priority should be given to the "shoes" of the mobile homes be checked before starting. After a long period of standing still, this definitely includes checking the air pressure on cold tires. The tires must also be checked for possible damage. If in doubt, a specialist in the workshop or specialist retailer will help.

RV check

  • Check tires before the start of the camping season
  • Avoid overloading – weigh the load before the start of the season
  • When it comes to tires, look out for special mobile home tires

Every motorhome owner can check the age of the tire himself - the so-called DOT number, which can be found on one of the sidewalls of the tire, shows the date of manufacture: There are two numbers in an oval field - first the week of production, then the year of production. 1123 means that the tire was manufactured in the 11th calendar week of this year. No tire on a mobile home should be older than six, maximum eight years, as they age faster than their brothers on cars due to the high loads and longer service lives. The remaining tread is not an indication of the further possible use of the tire.

If you find out that the tire is older, you should, if possible, look for models with the CP standard (CP stands for “camping tyres”) when buying a new one. They are primarily designed on the rear axle for the special requirements of mobile homes with their high weight and are therefore more robust than normal transporter tyres. Some of these models, such as the modern VanContact Camper from Continental, are also licensed all year round, so that trips in the cold season are also possible. The mobile home specialist is made for the usual rim sizes of 15, 16 and 18 inches.

don't forget the water tank

Once the tires have been checked, the additional battery is charged, the gas bottle is as full as possible and – if necessary – the gas system has been checked, loading can begin. It should be noted that the water tank also has a few kilograms (one per liter content) on board. If possible, the luggage should not be loaded onto the rear axle, which is already heavily used, but should be stowed in the middle of the vehicle, as close to the ground as possible and without slipping. This keeps body roll within limits and driving stability increases. You can be sure if you determine the payload with a bathroom scale - and don't ignore the kilos of the water tank and the gas bottle. It should not be forgotten that built-in accessories such as awnings will be charged if you do not want to overload the home on wheels. Photo credit: Continental
