Ford Escort Cosworth MK1 as Restomod by Gordon Murray!

The name Gordon Murray should be familiar to most. Because from Formula 1 to McLaren F1, Murray is well known to car fans in particular. After all, the iconic McLaren F1 isn't just the ultimate car of the '90s, it's still a serious supercar today. And decades later it is still faster at 300 km/h than a Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV & SVJ, a Ferrari 488 GTB or a Gumpert Apollo Sport. In concrete terms, this means that he is (as far as we know) is still the fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine. But apart from various super sports cars and thoroughbred racing vehicles, there are also Murrays Vehicles, who do not quote a seven or eight-digit price. And one of them is this one Mk I Ford Escort, recently published by Jonny Smith of The Late Brake Show featured in a video.

Murray bought the old Escort and left it with the team retro power convert to a thoroughbred restomod. And you can't really see that on the classic from the outside. Yes, the boys and girls know exactly what they are doing. After all, one is already responsible for successful restomods such as a Mercedes-Benz Coupé (W8) equipped with LS-V111 up to the Opel Manta 400 with RB25DET engine. And now it was the turn of the Mk I Escort. It has one under the fully restored body 2,3 liter Duratec engine installed, with individual throttle (with MBE management), who is from Cosworth on 240 PS was tuned. The engine is coupled to a Six-speed transmission out of a Mazda MX-5, there was one Ford 7 inch Sierra differential with Quaife parts and continue to be powered Rear wheels. However, from now on about a Quaife limited slip differential.

Independent suspension in the old Cosworth

  • Nitron Coilovers (Custom Built)
  • AP four-piston brake system

On the rear axle there was another specially made one Independent suspension with a Chapman strut ("Chapman struts") instead of the rigid axle. Next there was Mk1 Mondeo hubs and Land Rover Freelander uprights. Other components such as special Suspension Bushings and Nitron Damper go without saying. According to Murray, the set-up is optimally designed for road use, but a bit too soft for real track day use. Incidentally, the classic looks almost unchanged. Although there were a few Cosworth emblems, but there are no really obvious indications of what is under the sheet metal. But that doesn't mean that nothing has changed on the body. the bonnet and the Hatchback are made of carbon and the air openings enlarged in front and behind. Generally there was one Part, which has not been revised.

some changes in the cabin

  • Sports bucket seats & sports steering wheel
  • modified shifter & handbrake
  • many anodized components
  • Custom instruments by Speedhut

And also in inner space Something happened. Murray does not install any sound system and also is the backseat removed, but this makes the custom interior even simpler and more or less nicer. And especially the removal of the rear seat contributes to the fact that the Escort is just over 900 kg weighs. In view of the 240 hp performance, that's a real announcement. As far as we know, the vehicle is not quite finished yet. Murray and Retropower want more optimizations make. We will hopefully find out exactly what these are in another video.
