With a more striking design, more customization options and the MBUX infotainment system, Mercedes-AMG is upgrading the E 53 4MATIC + Sedan and Estate models. The completely redesigned front view gives the Performance E-Class an even more powerful appearance. The AMG-specific radiator grille with its A-shaped outline reinforces the width effect, as does the flat LED headlights. Extensive design measures also make the rear view of the sedan appear even more muscular. These include the two-part rear lights, the new rear apron and the new diffuser insert. The interior is also characterized by its large displays, the new AMG Performance steering wheel and the AMG-specific MBUX functions for more sportiness. The electrified 3,0-liter engine with double charging by means of an exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional electric compressor produces 320 kW (435 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 520 Nm.

Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly delivers additional 16 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque and also feeds the 48-volt electrical system. Other technical highlights include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC +. "UOur revised E 53 4MATIC + has been extensively upgraded both as a sedan and as a station wagon. The optical update offers our customers real added value, which our typical AMG grill impressively underlines. With the electrified 3,0-liter engine, we have retained the proven drive train. The extensively revised chassis now offers even more spread between long-distance comfort and precise dynamics", Says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Two power domes and round double tailpipe trims

Other visual features of the sedan and the estate include the bonnet with two striking power domes, the large outer air intakes with two cross blades and the new front splitter in silver chrome. The flics in high-gloss black improve the aerodynamics at a crucial point. The most important distinguishing feature at the rear are the round double tailpipe trims, which are available in high-gloss chrome or high-gloss black (as part of the Night Package). The sedan received new, two-part full-LED rear lights, the T-model adopted the new interior design.

The dynamic appearance is rounded off by newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels in an aerodynamically optimized 5-twin-spoke design. Optionally, 20-inch alloy wheels in 5-twin-spoke design are available, also aerodynamically optimized and designed with a wider rim, optionally painted in matt black or in high-gloss titanium gray.

With the optional AMG Night package, the new E 53 models can be made even sportier. Front splinters, mirror caps, window frames, side skirts, trim in the rear apron and tailpipe trims are designed here in high-gloss black. In conjunction with the Night Package, the darkened AMG radiator grille is available as an additional option. It gives the front design an individual finishing touch.

Interior with innovative MBUX infotainment system

The interior of the new models welcomes passengers with AMG-specific features, luxurious materials and the latest generation of MBUX infotainment systems. The synthesis of exclusivity and sportiness is embodied in the sports seats in man-made ARTICO leather / black DINAMICA microfibre with AMG graphics, red contrasting topstitching and AMG badge. AMG performance seat packages can be ordered as an option for all available upholstery, both in ARTICO man-made leather / DINAMICA microfibre and in nappa leather. There are also red seat belts and various trim elements.

Visually, the two displays for instrument cluster and multimedia displays merge under a common cover glass to form the widescreen cockpit. With the instrument cluster, the customer can switch between the three AMG display styles "Modern Classic", "Sport" and "Supersport". The "Supersport" mode with a central, round tachometer and bar-shaped additional information, which is located to the left and right of the tachometer, is particularly striking. The driver can use the AMG menu to call up various special displays such as engine data, gear display, warm-up, set-up, G-meter and race timer. The touchscreen multimedia display also emphasizes the dynamic alignment with individual AMG displays such as the visualization of the driving programs or telemetry data.

AMG TRACK PACE, the virtual racing engineer, is also optionally available for the E 53 models: the software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and continuously records more than 80 vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration) while driving over a racetrack. In addition, lap and sector times are displayed as well as the difference to the reference time. The augmented reality function of MBUX also enables the ideal line of a saved race track to be shown on the multimedia display or the optional head-up display, so that the driver can improve his lap times like with a virtual instructor.

New AMG Performance steering wheel as standard

With a fresh design and seamlessly integrated buttons, the new AMG Performance steering wheel creates an even closer relationship between man and machine. The three rounded double spokes combine stability with lightness, and the steering wheel rim, which is flattened at the bottom, is a typical motorsport element. The cover is available in leather, in microfiber DINAMICA or as a combination of leather and microfiber - with steering wheel heating on request. In addition, the steering wheel rim contains a capacitive sensor mat for recognizing “hands-on”. If the system detects that the driver will not have their hands on the steering wheel for a certain period of time, a warning cascade is started which, if the driver continues to be inactive, activates the emergency stop assistant.

The capacitive switches, which are seamlessly integrated into the surfaces of the horizontal double spokes, are also new and visually very elegant. Haptic feelers in the area of the symbols make operation easier. The instrument cluster is operated via the left sensor surface of the upper steering wheel spokes and the media display via the right sensor surface. The lower spokes contain the controls for cruise control / DISTRONIC (left) and telephone / handsfree / volume control (right). The optional AMG steering wheel buttons for controlling the driving programs and other, individually definable functions have received even more brilliant displays and are now both round.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission can be shifted manually using the metal shift paddles arranged on the left and right behind the steering wheel rim. The newly designed paddles are ergonomically adapted to the new AMG Performance steering wheel, slightly larger than before and positioned further down.

Inline six-cylinder with EQ Boost starter generator

2020 Mercedes-AMG E53 (W213) with 457 PS & 770 NM!

The 3,0-liter inline six-cylinder of the E 53 models is characterized by top performance and intelligent electrification. The EQ Boost starter generator combines starter and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is installed between the engine and transmission. It is not only used as an electrical generator, but also takes on hybrid functions. These include boosting with 16 kW of power and 250 Newton meters of torque, recuperation, shifting the load point, sailing and the almost imperceptible restart of the engine with the start-stop function. This innovation as well as the intelligent supercharging with an additional electric compressor (eZV) and an exhaust gas turbocharger pursue the same goal: to increase the typical AMG performance and driving dynamics, but at the same time to reduce consumption and emissions. The starter generator supports the start-up with its boost. In addition, the additional electric compressor builds up high boost pressure without delay, which means that the torque for acceleration accelerates faster until the large exhaust gas turbocharger starts. The 3,0-liter engine reacts extremely spontaneously and offers a highly dynamic response without the so-called turbo lag. An additional bonus is the high running culture of the straight six-cylinder.

270 km / h top speed, bigger brakes

The electronically limited top speed in the new E 53 models can be increased to 270 km / h with the AMG Driver's Package (standard: 250 km / h). The high-performance brake system is designed according to power and performance: perforated and internally ventilated discs in the size 370 x 36 mm with four-piston fixed calipers and AMG lettering are used on the front axle, and internally ventilated discs in the size 360 x 26 mm on the rear axle with one-piston floating calipers.

Short shift times, high efficiency: AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission

The new 3,0-liter in-line engine is coupled with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which impresses with extremely short shift times, quick responses to shift paddle commands, the double-declutching function and multiple downshifts. Whether triggered automatically or by the driver on the steering wheel shift paddle: an upshift or downshift is implemented immediately. Especially in the “Sport +” driving program and in manual mode, the transmission operates very spontaneously. Dynamic acceleration maneuvers and the shortest shift times can be called up, as can a fuel-saving driving style, depending on the selected driving program.

Characteristics at your fingertips: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

2020 Mercedes-AMG E53 (W213) with 457 PS & 770 NM!

With the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Smoothness", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual", the characteristics of the new 53 models can be influenced at the touch of a finger. The differentiation ranges from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Important parameters such as the response behavior of the engine, transmission, chassis and steering are modified. Regardless of the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs, the driver can switch directly to manual mode in order to switch exclusively via the steering wheel paddles. Likewise, the chassis levels can also be selected if necessary.

The AMG DYNAMICS driving dynamics control is integrated into the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs. In the "Basic", "Advanced" and "Pro" levels, it influences, for example, the control strategies of the ESP® (Electronic Stability Program) or all-wheel drive. Based on driver actions and sensor data, the intelligent pilot control anticipates the desired vehicle behavior. The range extends from extremely stable to highly dynamic. The AMG DYNAMICS functions can also be selected individually using the AMG steering wheel buttons.

Independent AMG RIDE CONTROL + suspension

2020 Mercedes-AMG E53 (W213) with 457 PS & 770 NM!

The AMG RIDE CONTROL + air suspension developed in Affalterbach is used for more agility, more neutral cornering behavior and greater traction. The multi-chamber air suspension with a particularly sporty spring-damper setup and the continuous adjustable damping ADS + (Adaptive Damping System) combines high driving dynamics with very good rolling comfort. Hardening of the spring rate, for example in curves or when braking, effectively reduces roll movements. The damping adapts to the current driving situation and the road conditions on each wheel. This is done quickly and precisely via separate valves for the pull and push directions in the dampers. In addition, the damper characteristic can be pre-selected in the three levels "Comfort," Sport "and" Sport + "and thus enables a clearly noticeable differentiation between high long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics.

Four-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC +

The fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC + all-wheel drive combines optimum traction for dynamic driving pleasure with high driving safety under all conditions: on dry roads as well as in wet conditions or on snow. The transition from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive and vice versa takes place continuously because the intelligent control system is integrated into the entire vehicle system architecture.

AMG Dynamic Plus package

2020 Mercedes-AMG E53 (W213) with 457 PS & 770 NM!

For an even more emotional driving experience, the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package bundles technical and visual equipment details that were previously reserved for the eight-cylinder models. One of the highlights is the RACE driving program with drift mode. The AMG performance steering wheel in DINAMICA microfibre or in leather has the steering wheel buttons for quick operation of the driving programs and other dynamic driving settings. Red painted brake calipers visually emphasize the sporty character. If we receive more information in a timely manner, there is of course an update for this report.
