Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

"Our new GLE 63 Coupé completes our attractive portfolio in this segment. It meets the highest demands in terms of design and exclusivity as well as excellent driving dynamics and agility. Our latest Sports Utility Coupé (SUC) is an outstanding example of Performance Luxury made by AMG. In addition, our GLE Coupé also has a 48-volt electrical system in conjunction with the EQ Boost starter generator, which we use to consistently advance the electrification of our series", Says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Expressive, powerful and elegant: the exterior design

The design language of the exterior design embodies the driving performance typical of AMG. The affiliation to the Affalterbacher model family can be seen at first glance thanks to the AMG-specific radiator trim in high-gloss chrome. The equally stylish and exciting coupé silhouette ensures a self-confident appearance and illustrates the passion for performance in its lines. Typical of the performance models is the front apron in the dynamic jet wing design in body color, combined with black air intakes. Dominantly shaped power domes in the bonnet and the front splitter in silver chrome support the all-round sharpened coupé design.

The side sill panels, the exterior mirror housings and the wheel arch extensions are painted in the vehicle color and thus blend seamlessly into the powerful overall picture. The basic model has 21-inch light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering fitted as standard; the S variant rolls on 22-inch wheels ex works. Upon request, further rim variants from 21 to 22 inches in diameter are available.

The redesigned rear apron with AMG-specific details such as the striking diffuser in black and the trim strip in silver chrome emphasize the width effect. The special AMG exhaust system with two angular, high-gloss chrome-plated double tailpipe trims completes the sporty, dominant look - as a differentiating feature, the tailpipe trims on the S variant feature characteristic ribbing. The optional AMG Night Package offers further customization options. It contains heat-insulating, dark-tinted windows as well as front splinters, trim parts in the front and rear aprons, inserts in the side skirts, mirror caps and window frames in elegant black. In addition, there are the double tailpipe trims in elegant high-gloss black.

Progressive, elegant and aesthetic: the interior design

The look and feel typical of the brand continues in the high-quality interior of the GLE 63 Coupé, which is characterized by a consistently sporty ambience with a dynamic, exclusive note. The AMG seats are covered with nappa leather, offer optimized lateral support and have an AMG-specific seat graphic with "AMG" badge in the front seat backrests. Additional leather variants are optionally available. The S variant is characterized, among other things, by the gray seat belts and a contrasting stitching in the seats in silver gray. The individually adjustable ambient lighting is standard on board.

AMG-specific interior fittings and controls give the cockpit the typical AMG atmosphere and support agile, precise handling. The AMG performance steering wheel in 3-spoke design with aluminum shift paddles impresses with an ergonomically optimal design tailored to the driver. In the basic model, the steering wheel rim is covered with black nappa leather, in the S version in nappa leather / DINAMICA microfiber, each with a black 12 o'clock marking. The AMG steering wheel buttons are available as an option for particularly quick setting of parameters relevant to driving dynamics.

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The center console contains an AMG-specific control element with additional switches that can be used to control the 3-stage ESP®, manual transmission mode, adaptive variable damping, the optional AMG Performance exhaust system and the vehicle level. In addition to the AMG sports pedal system made of brushed stainless steel with rubber knobs, door sills and black floor mats with "AMG" lettering underline the sporty appearance. For further interior customization, there is a wide range of high-quality decorative elements to choose from. The AMG trim elements in carbon give the interior a particularly sporty touch.

Continuation of the electrification: the EQ Boost starter generator in the AMG 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine

The 4,0-liter V8 biturbo engine in the new GLE 63 Coupé is equipped with an integrated EQ Boost starter generator in both output levels (420 kW / 571 PS and 450 kW / 612 PS). It combines starter and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is installed between the engine and transmission to save space. The briefly available 16 kW (22 hp) output and 250 Nm torque not only enable more spontaneous starting behavior. In addition, the innovative component feeds the 48-volt electrical system, is used as an electrical generator and also takes on hybrid functions. This includes boosting, recuperation, shifting the load point and the almost imperceptible restart of the engine with the start-stop function.

The 4,0-liter V8 engine works with the proven biturbo charging, in which the two turbochargers are not located outside, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the "hot inner V" are the compact engine design and the spontaneous response of the turbocharger. These are designed in twin-scroll technology in order to make optimum use of the exhaust gas flow and to further improve the response behavior.

The intelligent AMG cylinder management

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

For increased efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with cylinder deactivation. In the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which significantly reduces fuel consumption. The cylinder deactivation is available in the wide speed range from 1.000 to 3.250 rpm if the driver has selected the "Comfort" driving program. A special display in the instrument cluster informs whether the cylinder deactivation is active and whether the engine is currently running in four or eight cylinder mode. The transition between these two operating states is spontaneous, fast and torque-neutral, so that the occupants do not have to accept any loss of comfort.

In the more powerful S variant, the eight-cylinder has active engine mounts. These solve the conflict of objectives between a connection of the drive train that is as soft as possible for high comfort and a connection that is as rigid as possible for optimal driving dynamics by adapting their stiffness to the respective driving conditions in two stages.

Agile and precise: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilization

Active roll stabilization ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL on a 48-volt basis makes a decisive contribution to the AMG-specific tuning for high driving dynamics. It precisely compensates body movements. The result: the handling remains precisely controllable and extremely direct, even in sporty limits. The system operates with two independently working electromechanical actuators on the front and rear axles, each of which has a planetary gearbox integrated into it. In this way, the stabilization not only reduces roll movements when cornering, but also enables more precise coordination of the steering and load change behavior. It also increases driving comfort when driving straight ahead because, for example, suggestions are compensated for by uneven road bumps. Body movements can be actively and optimally adapted to the driving condition, which intensifies the driving experience.

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

Another advantage compared to hydraulic-based systems is the significantly faster response. The AMG control can adapt the driving state to the circumstances in the millisecond range. Added to this is the lower weight of the components compared to hydraulic solutions.

Driving pleasure high seven: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT and AMG DYNAMICS

The up to seven DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs Comfort, Sport, Sport +, Individual, RACE (exclusive in the S variant of the GLE 63 Coupé), trail and sand enable a very different driving experience with a wide range from high comfort to agile sportiness. Important parameters such as the response behavior of the engine, transmission, chassis and steering are modified.

  • "Comfort": Comfortable and consumption-optimized driving, including through early upshifts. Chassis and steering are adjusted to comfort.
  • "Sport": Sporty design through more agile response to accelerator commands, shorter shift times, earlier and more precise downshifts due to double-declutching. More dynamic tuning of the chassis.
  • “Sport +”: Extremely sporty design thanks to even more agile throttle response, intermediate throttle when downshifting and targeted torque interventions when shifting up with cylinder blanking for optimal shift times. Increased idle speed for faster starting. Chassis, steering and drive train are tuned even more dynamically.
  • "Individual": Individual adjustment of drive, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS, chassis and exhaust system. In addition, the sailing function is also available in the "Reduced" and "Moderate" drive settings
  • "RACE" (exclusive in the S variant): The "RACE" driving program is designed for highly dynamic driving on closed racetracks. Here all parameters are trimmed for maximum performance.
  • "Trail": Safe driving with maximum performance on soft, muddy or slippery surfaces by adjusting the throttle response, the power distribution and the chassis. The vehicle is set to an elevated level. The vehicle automatically lowers again from 70 km / h.
  • "Sand": The settings of the chassis and the 4MATIC + all-wheel drive are made for sporty use on a fine, loose surface. The vehicle is set to an elevated level. The vehicle automatically lowers again from 70 km / h.

The programs are linked to the agility control AMG DYNAMICS, which means that the driving behavior can be adjusted even more differently to different requirements and driving conditions. Behind the generic term AMG DYNAMICS are the agility functions "Basic", "Advanced", "Pro" and "Master", whose functions are automatically selected by the respective driving program. In the "Trail" and "Sand" off-road driving programs, the "Traction" and "Slide" levels are added when the ESP® is switched off.

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

Driving-relevant parameters such as the response behavior of the engine and chassis, the control strategy of the all-wheel drive system and the active roll stabilization or the control thresholds of the ESP® are intelligently adjusted depending on the driving program. The range extends from safety-oriented to highly dynamic. The "Master" mode stored in the RACE driving program ensures optimum agility and brings the high driving dynamics potential to full advantage - for example through higher yaw rates and faster response of the accelerator pedal, gearshift, electronically controlled rear-axle locking differential or power distribution of the all-wheel drive.

Regardless of the driving programs, the driver can use the buttons in the center console or the steering wheel buttons to select the manual transmission mode, the preferred chassis level or, for example, the exhaust system.

Precise and fast: the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission is specially tailored to the requirements of the eight-cylinder in the GLE 63 Coupé. The consistent further development of hardware and software has made it possible to optimize the response times. Automatic and manual switching commands can thus be implemented faster than ever before. Various reinforcement measures ensure longevity and performance even with the high torques of the V8 engine.

The elaborately coordinated software ensures extremely short switching times, fast multiple downshifts and, thanks to the double throttle function, delivers a particularly emotional switching experience. The switching operations take place without interrupting the tractive force. Dynamic acceleration maneuvers and the shortest shift times can be called up, as can a fuel-saving driving style - depending on the selected driving program.

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The highlights of the transmission:

  • Adaptation of the shift characteristic to the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving program
  • In manual "M" mode, the transmission reacts immediately to manual shift commands from the driver - the drive train reacts precisely and implements the commands at lightning speed
  • The short-term M program enables a spontaneous change to manual "M" mode - simply by using the shift paddles
  • Automatic double-declutching function when downshifting: this effect is automatically active in the "Sport", "Sport +" and "RACE" driving programs (exclusively in the S variant)
  • ECO start / stop function automatically active in the "Comfort" drive program
  • "Sail" function can be activated in the "Individual" drive program

Even sportier: the air suspension with continuous adjustment damping

The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL + air suspension suspension combines high agility and excellent driving dynamics with maximum traction and a high level of everyday comfort with the setup specially tailored to the SUV properties and the adaptive damping system ADS + (Adaptive Damping System). The damper characteristic can be pre-selected in the three levels "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport +" and thus enables a clearly noticeable differentiation between high long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics.

Pneumatic level control gives the new GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé a constant vehicle level that is independent of the payload. This can be varied depending on the driving program or manually using the rocker switch in the center console. The vehicle level is lowered in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Sport", "Sport +" and "RACE" (S variant only). In the "Comfort" driving program, the level also drops from 120 km / h and is raised to normal level again below 70 km / h. The lowering reduces the air resistance at higher speeds and thus the fuel consumption. In addition, driving stability improves due to the lower center of gravity. In the "Trail" and "Sand" driving programs, the vehicle level is increased on poor roads to increase ground clearance and is automatically reduced to normal level from 70 km / h. This function can also be controlled manually using the rocker switch.

Four-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC + with fully variable torque distribution

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The performance-oriented all-wheel drive ensures the best possible balance between dynamics, traction and efficiency. An electromechanically controlled clutch variably connects the constantly driven rear axle to the front axle. The best possible torque distribution is calculated continuously - depending on the driving situation and driver request. The transition from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive and vice versa takes place continuously because the intelligent control is integrated into the entire vehicle system architecture. In addition to traction and lateral dynamics, the all-wheel drive also improves the longitudinal dynamics for even more powerful acceleration. Influencing factors for the torque distribution are not only the driving speed, the lateral and longitudinal acceleration and the steering angle, but also the speed difference between the individual wheels and the gear selection.

The four-wheel drive is controlled depending on the selected level of the 3-stage Electronic Stability Program ESP® - from safety-related sporty to highly dynamic. The 4ETS driving dynamics control system also increases driving safety and agility, especially on surfaces with different grip or slippery surfaces. It prevents the drive wheels from spinning on one side when starting off and accelerating via brake intervention. At the same time, the resulting locking differential effect shifts the drive torque to the non-spinning wheels.

The electronic rear axle limited slip differential - for even more dynamism

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

To further improve traction and dynamics, the GLE 63 Coupé and GLE 63 S Coupé have an electronically controlled limited slip differential on the rear axle as standard. This prevents slippage on the inside wheel, which ensures optimum grip and the best possible driving safety. Thanks to improved traction, the driver can accelerate out of corners earlier and more powerfully. The vehicle remains more stable when braking at high speeds, and the limited slip differential also improves traction when accelerating from a standing start.

For a firm footing: the AMG high-performance braking systems

In accordance with the high performance values and the associated performance, the new GLE 63 Coupé models have a large, high-performance composite brake system with 6-piston fixed callipers and 400 x 38 mm brake discs at the front as well as 1-piston floating callipers and 370 x 32 mm - Rear brake discs. The S variant is characterized by red brake calipers, while the basic variant carries gray brake calipers.

A high-performance ceramic brake system with bronze-colored 6-piston fixed calipers at the front and 1-piston floating calipers at the rear is optionally available, which saves weight compared to the composite discs and thus reduces the unsprung masses. Other advantages are their high stability and fading stability under heavy use. In addition, the brake system scores with a long service life and a particularly spontaneous response.

Direct and immediate: the AMG sports parameter steering

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The electromechanical sports parameter steering is variably translated. Thanks to the specific rack and pinion ratio, it impresses with its precise feedback. The steering assistance is assigned to the AMG DYNAMICS stages. The coordination in "Basic" and "Advanced" is comfort-oriented. In "Pro" and "Master" is a vote deposited, which supports a sporty driving style and gives more road feedback.

With AMG-specific displays: the MBUX infotainment system

The innovative operating and display concept MBUX is standard on board the GLE 63 Coupé and creates an even closer connection between vehicle, driver and passengers. At the same time, the latest version of the infotainment system contributes to its high suitability for everyday use. Emotional stagings such as the particularly striking Supersport mode with a central tachometer and three-dimensional scale indicators that give the instrument visual depth underline the exclusivity.

In the "Supersport" view, there is extensive AMG-specific additional information, such as a request borrowed from motorsport to shift up in manual transmission mode, the so-called "Shiftlight". The driver can also call up additional special displays via the AMG menu:

  • Gear indicator - with yellow "M" symbol in manual mode
  • Warm-up menu - engine and transmission oil temperature
  • Set-up menu - AMG DYNAMIC SELECT settings
  • G-meter - longitudinal and lateral acceleration forces
  • Race timer - stopwatch, lap and sector times
  • Engine data - power and torque, engine oil and transmission oil temperature

The newly designed visualizations in the multimedia display make it possible to experience other vehicle functions even better, including through animated displays of the driver assistance, vehicle and communication systems and the driving programs. When the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs "Trail" and "Sand" are activated, off-road-specific settings such as incline, incline and differential lock can be selected in the instrument cluster and shown in the media display.

Hybrid: Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 4MATIC + Coupé (C 167)

The optional ENERGIZING Package Plus offers increased comfort. It bundles many premium features and includes multi-contour seats for the driver and front passenger, seat air conditioning for the driver and front passenger (with seat heating and seat ventilation), the warmth comfort package, the AIR BALANCE package (scenting including AMG-specific fragrance # 63, ionization and cleaning the air) and six ENERGIZING comfort programs as well as the ENERGIZING COACH for the intelligent pre-selection of ENERGIZING comfort programs that suit the driving situation and driver's condition.
