Premiere: Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron!

this article passes different Pages

The Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron bring the best prerequisites for a high level of comfort, driving pleasure and superior driving stability. In the models up to 150 kW (204 hp), the rear-wheel drive ensures strong traction - something that can be experienced in many situations, starting with starting off on a wet road. The high-voltage battery is located under the passenger cell at the lowest point in the car. The center of gravity and the distribution of the axle loads benefit from this: This is close to the ideal value of 50:50 for all drive variants.

The front axle of the compact electric SUVs is designed in the classic McPherson design, the steering is at the bottom at the front. A compact five-link construction works in the rear, which is similar to the rear axle of the large Audi models. Like the front axle, it is linked to a subframe. Some parts of the suspension are made of lightweight aluminum. The track widths are 1.587 millimeters at the front and 1.565 millimeters at the rear.

Large wheels: 19 to 21 inches with mixed tires

The Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron live big - their wheel range includes eleven variants in sizes from 19 to 21 inches. Apart from the basic version, these are aluminum wheels, with distinctive aerodynamic designs in every inch. In the 20-inch class there are two wheels from Audi Sport GmbH, in the 21-inch category all four. One of them has a matt bronze finish, another one in platinum gray. The third is an aero bike that is largely covered by black plastic inlays.

All engines come off the production line with mixed tires, which further improve stability and sportiness. The front tires are uniformly 235 millimeters wide, the rear 255 millimeters, the cross-sections differ depending on the rim size. All tires have been optimized in terms of rolling resistance, in the 21-inch class there is a decidedly sporty tire variant for the Sportback.

There are strong brakes behind the big wheels. The discs on the front axle have a diameter of 330 to 358 millimeters, depending on the engine power, and drum brakes on the rear wheels are particularly low-wear and low-maintenance. The drums reduce the risk of corrosion. Because with a purely electric drive, the wheel brakes are rarely used in everyday driving - most of the decelerations are handled by the electric motor in the rear, which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Even more driving fun: two dynamic packages

Upon request, Audi can equip the two electric compact SUVs with the dynamic package or the dynamic package plus. In the dynamic package, the sports suspension (standard on the S line) lowers the body by 15 millimeters and instead of the conventional steering, the progressive steering is installed here (standard on the quattro models); it works more and more directly as the steering angle increases.

The third component of the dynamic package is the Audi drive select dynamic handling system (standard on the Sportback), which gives the driving experience new facets. With Audi drive select, the driver can change the characteristics of the steering, electric motors and electric all-wheel drive (in the quattro models) using the modes “comfort”, “auto”, “efficiency”, “individual” and “dynamic”. In the MMI touch operating system, he can also activate the “range” mode, in which the car moves with maximum energy efficiency. The top speed is limited here to 90 km / h, in "efficiency" mode it is 130 km / h.

In the dynamic package plus: the chassis with damper control

The dynamic package plus is another component on board the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Q4 Sportback e-tron - the chassis with damper control. Its control unit manages the characteristics of the dampers, depending on the driving situation, every five milliseconds by regulating the flow of the oil. It thus covers a wide field - from gentle rolling to crisp, sporty handling.

The suspension with damper control is networked with Audi drive select as well as with the electronic driving dynamics controller. In addition to the adaptive dampers, it also controls the braking interventions of the wheel-selective torque control, working closely with the ESC stabilization control. The system aims to harmonize the real behavior of the car with a digital target model so that lateral dynamics and driving safety always achieve the optimum.

The ESC, in turn, works closely with the control units for the e-machine and its power electronics. Their work is particularly effective in the rear-wheel drive models. Although such a car tends to oversteer in principle, the networking ensures that the Q4 e-tron Find a secure grip in every situation - at full acceleration, when cornering quickly and during braking recuperation. The regulation occurs every millisecond, and so quickly and gently that the driver hardly notices it. With a switch he can put the ESC into sport mode and deactivate the ASR traction control.
