The California company Zelectric Motors, under the direction of David Benardo (describes himself as a retro-futurist), has specialized in converting popular vintage cars to electric drive. The company from San Diego concentrates thereby preferentially on the brands VW and Porsche. No matter if it is a Karmann Ghia, a VW Bulli T1 or the legendary VW Beetle. A conversion beats however with at least 50.000 $ to book plus donor vehicle. The easiest option is an electric motor with 65 kW and 88 PS which makes a good figure in the VW Beetle. For a heavier VW Bulli or a sporty Karmann Ghia / Porsche 911 but you should bet on the slightly larger 90 KW variant.

And if you have a bit of patience, you may soon be able to fall back on a variant with 120 kW / 163 PS and a range of approx. 150 miles. The power is drawn by the electric motor 37 lithium-ion batteries, which have a capacity of 22 kWh and are distributed in the vehicle in different positions. So far, boxer models from Volkswagen from the period 1958 to 1967 have been rebuilt and also the first Porsche models from the 911er to the 914er are already electrified. There is also a VW 181 Kübelwagen (The Thing) and many more will follow. The necessary painting and conversion work outside of the electronics are carried out in companies in the area. By the way, when it comes to battery choice, the company almost always resorts to used batteries from a crashed Smart Fortwo Electric Drive or Tesla Model S.

Since the old vehicles ex factory have neither a power steering nor air conditioning, the conversion is designed almost always relatively simple. The interior is enhanced with an LCD display in the dashboard that informs about the charge level of the battery pack. Otherwise you do not make any changes here. The vehicle is then charged with the supplied level 1 charging cable (120-Volt-US-socket with AC) or at a level 2 station (Wallbox, AC 240 Volt).
