Give way to parking lots: you should know these rules!

The traffic rules in parking lots of supermarkets and parking garages distinguish often different from those on public roads. Some of the parking lots have a sign "StVO valid" on, which means that the general road traffic regulations are to be observed, provided there are signs. While normal road rules apply in some parking lots, lanes are mostly there to to separate the parking areas and directing the flow of traffic. The lanes are not binding in relation to the direction of travel and indicate no priority roads out, but serve only as recommendation direction. If a shield "StVO valid" placed at the entrance of a supermarket car park, it essentially refers only on the first paragraphs of the StVO, which regulates general behavior on the road.

Although many supermarket car parks are subject to the StVO, they are usually in Privately owned. The owner can therefore define your own rules, as long as they comply with the StVO. These special rules are identified by traffic signs or notices. Therefore, traffic rules can vary from one supermarket car park to another distinguish. It is therefore always advisable to pay attention to the signs and to follow herto avoid penalties. The right of way "right before left" is in tramlines not necessarily valid. Even if the owner of the parking space emphasizes compliance with the road traffic regulations, the rule "right before left" in lanes that are primarily used to find a parking space is not binding.

The rule only applies to lanes that are clear have a street character, as with wider entrances and exits to the parking lot. In other lanes flanked by parking lots and not giving the appearance of flowing traffic dominates the principle of mutual respect according to paragraph 1 paragraph 1 and 2 of the Road Traffic Act. So the rule is "right before left" not automatically valid when exiting a parking lot or crossing marked areas. Because of the variable traffic situation in parking lots should also always slow and ready to brake be driven. The driver with the right of way should don't automatically assume itthat the "right before left" rule is observed. When in doubt, you should coordinate with the other driver.

the "right before left" rule

A traffic accident in a car park underscores the importance of following the traffic rules in supermarket car parks and in multi-storey car parks to act with foresight. In a specific case two vehicles collided at an intersection of two small tramlines. They then debated claims for damages. A stakeholder argued that his right of way had been ignored. However, the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court ruled that both drivers have to share the damage equally, since both contributed equally to the accident.
