In the field of tuning has long been the case not the motto "whatever pleases is allowed". Official test marks must be available for conversion parts and many changes must be approved by an expert. And the question of the guarantee also remains in the room. If the production model is too bland, you can create an almost different car with numerous additions and conversions. Such conversions are also generally permitted as long as the applicable guidelines are observed in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
When tuning is legal!
When tuning vehicles, the changes under the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) must be approved accordingly. In addition, all new parts must have an official test mark, such as a general operating permit (ABE), a general type approval (ABG), one EC type approval or the so-called "ECE approval". It is also possible a Teilegutachten to be obtained from the examiner, such as TÜV or Dekra.
Even if there is an official test mark, a parts certificate may be required if several parts interact with each other or have other effects on the vehicle. In this case, a separate assessment by an officially recognized expert is required. Keyword: "mutual influence in combinations of changes"!
Is removing logos allowed?
Some tuners prefer the so-called "Cleaning", in which the car is stripped of all parts that, in the opinion of the tuner, spoil the external impression. The removal of the brand logo is a first step and usually does not lead to legal problems. This is a purely visual change that does not affect the safety of the vehicle or traffic. However sees that not every EU country so. In Austria there can be problems, among other things!
When cleaning other parts such as door handle recesses, things look different in this country too. For legal reasons, these cannot simply be removed, since emergency services should open the doors quickly and as intended by the manufacturer in an emergency. Likewise, the license plate must not be changed. Whether it conforms to the law can be seen from the DIN test and monitoring mark with the associated register number on the front.
What must be entered?
It basically have to all changes, which affect the noise and exhaust gas properties and could endanger safety. However, it is difficult to say in general which changes must be checked by an expert and entered in the papers. In general, however, these always include the currently popular ones Wide body kits, which widen the car, as well as new wheel combinations (tire & wheel) that deviate from the combinations specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
In the field of tuning are so-called roll cages or roll bars, as they are known from motor sports, are often exempt from the registration requirement. In practice, however, there are often deviations from this rule. If the cage or bar impairs the view or the properties of the car, for example by eliminating seats or making it difficult to get in with a strut, an entry is required.
The Change of shift stick usually does not require registration as long as it bears an official test mark. In the case of total conversions, however, an expert opinion is always required. However, if the parts and finishes conform to current standards, there are usually no problems. Brand manufacturers almost always supply all the necessary reports and approvals, which means that Acceptance of changes usually do not pose a particular challenge.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
