High-resolution light projection with innovative assistance functions

In its predecessor, this future technology celebrated its world premiere in small series, with the new S-Class generation DIGITAL LIGHT is now starting in large series. The headlight technology (optional equipment) enables completely new functions, such as the projection of auxiliary markings or warning symbols onto the road. DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module in each headlight with three extremely bright LEDs, whose light is refracted and directed with the help of 1,3 million micro-mirrors. The resolution per vehicle is therefore over 2,6 million pixels.

The micromirrors are housed on the surface of a thumbnail. A control unit with a powerful graphics computer generates a permanent video stream to the mirrors via an HDMI-like connection. Digital Light takes up the technology of video beamers. The new headlight in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can be recognized by its concave lens, the lettering and a shining blue floor panel.

The light, which is divided into 1,3 million pixels, enables precise light distribution. The high-beam assistant is over 100 times more accurate than the 84-pixel light when it comes to fading out oncoming traffic or traffic signs. The light-dark boundaries and the light distribution of all other adaptive light functions are also displayed with significantly improved precision, which optimizes the illumination in fog light, motorway light or city light, for example.

These assistance functions deserve special mention:

  • Warning of detected construction sites through the projection of an excavator symbol on the roadway
  • Warning and marking by a spotlight on detected pedestrians at the edge of the road
  • Indication of traffic lights, stop signs or no entry by projecting a warning symbol onto the lane
  • Support on narrow roadways (construction site) by projecting guide markings onto the roadway

On the basis of data from the navigation maps, the topographical light takes into account mountain drives, in particular hilltops and valleys: when driving over a hilltop, for example, the headlight does not shine into the sky, but is swiveled down parallel to the road. In depressions, the light cone is raised and thus the desired range is obtained.

DIGITAL LIGHT also welcomes and says goodbye to the driver with a special light show.

While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
