A new dimension in personalization and interaction

The second generation of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), the adaptive system introduced in 2018, is being launched in the new S-Class. What is unique about MBUX is that it is networked with a wide variety of vehicle systems and sensor data. On up to five screens, some with OLED technology, brilliant views make it easier to control vehicle and comfort functions. The options for personalization and intuitive operation have become much more extensive. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can also be equipped with the MBUX interior assistant in the rear if required.

The MBUX interior assistant recognizes numerous operating requests. He interprets the direction of view, hand movements and body language of the occupants in order to assist with automatic vehicle functions depending on the situation. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class can also record the movements and gestures of the rear passengers with the help of 3D laser cameras in the headliner. For example, the seat belt feeder for the outer seats extends automatically as soon as the MBUX Interior Assistant detects the intention to reach for the seat belt by moving a hand. The exit warning function has also been expanded and can register that a rear passenger wants to leave the vehicle. Further functions of the MBUX interior assistant in the rear are described in the next chapter.

Up to five screens with intuitive operation

The optical highlight in the interior is the large one Central display in portrait format. Its arrangement is ergonomically advantageous because the screen is easy to see and easy to reach between the driver and front passenger. The portrait format also enables longer lists to be displayed. The central display has OLED technology as standard. The abbreviation OLED stands for "Organic Light Emitting Diode". The advantages of the technology compared to LCD screens are a better black level, even stronger contrasts and lower energy consumption.

The  Driver display is also available with a unique innovation on request: at the push of a button, you can switch to a 3D mode with spatial scene perception. A real depth effect is achieved with the help of eye tracking without having to wear special 3D glasses. This optional version of the driver display has two integrated cameras. This stereo camera takes over the exact determination of the observer's eye position. For this purpose, Mercedes-Benz has developed methods for adapting the distance and designed the system to be extremely low in latency, i.e. almost without delay. So the driver can move freely. The representation in the driver's display is continuously adjusted. Cameras and face recognition are also used for a wide range of assistance and convenience functions. These include the new biometric authentication, the drowsiness warning ATTENTION ASSIST, the preselection of the exterior mirrors and (probably from the second half of 2021 initially in Germany) also the observation of the movement of the head and eyes during automated driving.

Comprehensive infotainment offer for rear passengers

The rear passengers experience the same extensive infotainment and comfort options as the driver and front passenger and can also watch films or surf the Internet. They have up to three touchscreen screens and a wide range of intuitive operating options such as the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant.

Content can be shared quickly and easily with other passengers on the screens. Navigation destinations can also be selected and modified from the rear seats. The MBUX high-end rear entertainment includes two 11,6-inch displays with touch controls on the back of the driver and front passenger seats. The MBUX rear tablet is standard in the Mercedes-Maybach. As a fully-fledged tablet, it can also be used outside the vehicle and (Android) apps can be installed. In the S-Class, the MBUX rear tablet sits in a docking station, which, depending on the equipment, is located in the foldable central armrest or the business console. With this convenient remote control, all functions of the rear seat can be conveniently controlled from any selected seating position.

Personalization is even easier and more convenient

A personal profile can be created directly in the S-Class and synchronized with existing profile data in the Mercedes me account. The vehicle is automatically connected to the Mercedes me account by scanning a QR code with the Mercedes me app.

Personal preferences such as your favorite radio station and default settings can be taken to all seats via your own Mercedes me profile. Up to seven different profiles with around 600 parameters can be set in the vehicle. The ambient lighting can be set individually via remote configuration, for example from home. Since the profiles are now saved as part of Mercedes me in the cloud, the profiles can also be used in other Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the new MBUX generation.

In addition to the classic entry of a PIN, a new authentication method ensures a high level of security. Fingerprint, face and voice recognition are combined. This also enables individual settings to be called up and digital payment processes to be secured from the vehicle.
