Performance improvement - tuning

More power under the hood ensures more driving fun - of course, not least for this reason, the engine and power tuning on the car is the cornerstone of all tuning variants. For as long as there have been cars, enthusiastic auto mechanics have been working. And the enthusiasm for powerful engines has not changed to this day. But the technology, which is now more complex and more powerful than a few years ago. Accordingly, this has also brought many new tuning options with it. The retrofitting of various components such as air filters, compressors, engine controls, intake and exhaust ducts or turbochargers makes the car's engine output bursting with power.

Possibilities to increase performance, tuning

Chiptuning

In the tuning segment, chip tuning is probably the best known and most professional way of tuning the car. With the tuning method, more than 30% more power can be achieved and, in addition, fuel consumption can be drastically reduced (up to 1,5 liters / 100 km).

Chiptuning by the engine control unit:
For this purpose, changes are made to the software of the control unit by the chip tuner in order to achieve maximum additional performance. Individual values (boost pressure, injection quantity, torque, pump voltage, etc.) are changed so minimally that it is no problem for the engine and all functions are retained without restrictions.
Chiptuning through an external additional box (tuning module / box)
Here, the engine control unit is fooled into believing that the tuning box is incorrect, e.g. air volume. The increase in performance is achieved because the control unit pumps a larger amount of fuel into the combustion chamber.

compressors

Additional performance of 40 - 50% percent is possible by retrofitting a compressor. More air is blown into the intake tract, which results in stronger combustion and thus an increase in performance. The compressor is attached to the outside of the engine as an additional component, which makes assembly fairly easy. The engine's diagnostic capabilities are retained in full, as is the running properties. However, a slightly increased fuel consumption and possibly a high level of noise must be expected after conversion.

turbocharger

Turbochargers achieve increased torque, which can result in more power of up to 55 percent. A turbocharger is also attached to the engine. However, it will, in contrast to a compressor, the kinetic energy and heat of the engine exhaust. With each intake stroke, additional air enters the combustion chamber, which increases the power.

Nitrous oxide injection / NOS

To increase the performance of an internal combustion engine, NOS tuning involves injecting cold liquefied nitrous oxide into the intake tract. Additional engine outputs of several hundred hp are thus possible, but only for a short time. The system can be switched on and off at any time so that the additional power can be optimally used.
There are two basic variants:
1. Dry System - the "dry system"
Only the nitrous oxide is injected, the fuel must be supplied separately from the injection system (unsafe system).
2. Wet system - the "wet system"
A finished mixture of nitrous oxide and fuel is injected directly. The fuel is added through nozzles of the laughing gas system (safe system because the engine always receives an optimal mixture of laughing gas and fuel).

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
