The liter output of the engine - this is how it is calculated!

The liter output is also called in the technical language Displacement designated. This specific performance of an internal combustion engine is a very special calculation variable. The liter output serves the purpose that you can Power of engines can calculate and then compare the results with the engine performance of cars with the same or different cubic capacity. The liter or cubic capacity is nothing other than the quotient of the nominal output and the cubic capacity of the engine. Incidentally, the technically correct and legally defined unit of measurement for the liter output is kW / l. It can be said in a simplified and summarized way that the liter output always indicates the output that an engine per liter of displacement can afford.

Displacement / liter output calculator

A tractor engine or a marine diesel engine usually have a rather low liter output. The reason for this is mainly the fact that these engines have a high torque at low speed are designed. The exact opposite is the case with Formula 1 cars or racing bikes. Here, with a rather small cubic capacity, very high ones are achieved Excellence. In return, however, such an engine requires high speeds and in comparison has only a narrow usable speed range with usable torque. To explain this a little sample calculation: For an engine with a rated capacity of around 105 kW and a displacement of 2,3 liters From a purely arithmetical point of view, this results in an average displacement 45,65 kW / l. If you then convert that into HP (1 kW = 1,35962), you get 62,06 HP per liter of displacement. That's not a lot.

Front-runner Mercedes-AMG A 45

Good to know: Nowadays the liter output increases continuously. A car like the Ford Ecoboost 1-liter three-cylinder already has a liter output of 103 kW, which is quite a lot. Current front runner (Updated 2021) is however the Mercedes AMG A 45. With a displacement of 1.991 cubic centimeters, it does magic 421 PS, which corresponds to a liter output of 211 hp / liter. A tuned variant with almost 500 hp, such as from Biesse Racing, even brings it up 250 hp per liter of displacement. However, this very rapid development also often affects the durability of the engine.

Racing engines were equipped with compressors and extreme fuel mixtures as early as 1939. Even then there were liter outputs of 125 kW / l in the Mercedes-Benz W 165. The turbo era of Formula 1 in the 80s was even possible to achieve a liter output of 736 kW / l with special fuels ("racing gasoline") and a lot of boost pressure. Tip: Often the outdated unit is still used instead of the correct unit of measure kW / l PS / ltr utilized.
